My strange experience with applying for the Chase Ink Business Preferred Upgraded to Economy, July 25, 2023 Recently, I found out that the Chase Ink Business Preferred card was offering a new sign-up bonus of 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after $8,000 of card spending in the first three months. With this greatly improved offer that reduces the spend requirement and increases the number of bonus points, I felt this was the time to apply. I have a company that has been waiting to have a business credit card for the longest time now. With the new offer, I just had to jump on it. There were no concerns about applying for too many credit cards either; a new business credit card through Chase would not impact my 5/24 eligibility. Applying for the credit card The credit card requires both my personal information (as the guarantor) and the business’ information. I filled out the business information with the EIN I was provided by the IRS. Verification requirements I filled out my application on July 1, 2023. A few days later, on July 4, 2023, I received a call from a number claiming to be Chase. I declined the call out of fear it would be a scam. They left a voicemail that said I needed to provide additional verification documents about my business’s EIN and physical address. I soon received both an email and snail mail that corroborated this request. The email sent me a link to send in verification documents. It said I had 14 days to submit the documents or else my application would be automatically denied. That would mean I had until July 18 to send in the documents. I promptly submitted my company’s EIN notice letter from the IRS, which would provide proof for both the address and the EIN itself. Not hearing back For the next few weeks, I called the automated phone line every few days to check on the status. It said to check back within 7-10 business days. But as the July 18 deadline loomed, I did not hear any updates from Chase. I decided on July 14 that I really needed to contact Chase to see what exactly was going on. While speaking with a customer service representative, we realized that my documents had not been received at all. The representative sent me a DocuSign that would allow me to submit my documents again. I did that and hoped for the best. The representative said I had plenty of time, as I had until July 30 to submit the documents, contrary to the July 18 deadline. Eventually, on July 20, I finally got the notification that my application had been approved. Final thoughts Chase almost forgot about my Ink application. Their systems lost track of the verification documents they asked me to send. I had to manually call in and sort things out. While I’m glad that things are fixed now, the experience was concerning and makes me lose faith in my otherwise amazing experience banking with Chase.
